Dunagiri Mata
Dunagiri Mata refers to the revered Dunagiri Devi Temple, a significant Hindu pilgrimage site and renowned Shaktipeeth located in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, India. The temple, also known as Dronagiri, is perched at an altitude of about 8,000 feet (2,400 meters) above sea level and is dedicated to Goddess Durga in her Vaishnavi form Ramayana Connection: Legend states that when Lord Hanuman was carrying the Sanjeevani Buti (life-saving herb) mountain to revive Lord Lakshman, a piece of the mountain fell at this location, giving the place its name (“Doona” meaning fallen, “Giri” meaning mountain). Mahabharata Connection: It is believed that the Pandavas spent part of their exile period here, and their guru, Dronacharya, performed austerity (meditation) on the mountain, which is why it is also known as Dronagiri Parvat. Spiritual Importance: The temple is considered the second Vaishno Shaktipeeth in the Kumaon region after the Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir. Uniquely, there is no idol inside the main temple; instead, naturally produced Siddha pinds (sacred stones) are worshipped as the manifestation of Mata Bhagwati. Animal sacrifices are strictly prohibited at this Vaishnavi site. Location and Access: The temple is located in the serene surroundings of Malla Surana, about 14 km from Dwarahat. Visitors must climb approximately 365 to 500 steps to reach the temple premises, which offer panoramic views of the Gogas Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
